Vision to 2021
The Greater Cambridge area is included within the London-Stansted-Cambridge-Peterborough Growth Area. Incorporating commitments set out in the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Structure Plan (2003), provision has been made for the construction of 47,500 net additional dwellings in the period 2001-2016 and 15,000 from 2016-2021 across the (wider) Regional Spatial Strategy-defined sub-region.
Aligned with this, the Regional Spatial Strategy for the East of England (RSS 14) identifies a job growth estimate of 70,500 jobs in the GCP sub-region to 2021. In order to assess if and how this indicative level of job growth might take place, the GCP and a range of partners appointed Roger Tym and Partners to clarify what interventions might be necessary to deliver the employment growth.
The report found that there will be no shortfall in employment opportunities if present trends continue. However in order for the region’s high-tech cluster to remain competitive internationally, interventions need to be considered. The recommended interventions were divided into physical interventions, skills needs and business support infrastructure.
‘The Cambridge Cluster, The Way Ahead’ produced by the Cambridge Technopole Group for the GCP,
further investigated and refined the business support infrastructure recommendations. The recommendations from these reports
will help shape the development of a new economic masterplan for the sub-region from 2008.
