St John’s Innovation Centre
The Cambridge high-tech economy has grown considerably since the 1970s. However, it is vital to continue to provide easy access to the particular mix of support that fledgling enterprises need to become established. Early stage businesses can struggle to find flexible accommodation and often lack the funding to secure quality, independent business support and guidance that can be critical to their successful development.
St John’s Innovation Centre (SJIC) provides incubation and flexible office and workshop accommodation targeted at start-ups and early stage knowledge-based businesses. The comprehensive package of support also includes advice and support programmes, access to networks, links with academic and research institutes and student resources. SJIC also provides strong connections to Innovation East – the regional innovation and technology transfer service for the East of England; the East of England Innovation Relay Centre; and Gateway2Innovate; plus a range of other services linked to, but not funded through, the enterprise hub. An EEDA grant of £494k delivered through the GCP enabled the development of the Enterprise Hub.
SJIC houses around 65 companies employing over 500 people. Over a five-year period the survival rate for companies is over 88%, compared to about 50% for other similar businesses in the Cambridge area and 45% for businesses generally in the UK.
