Papworth Cardio-Thoracic BioIncubator

www.papworthpeople.com

Papworth Hospital is a leading specialist cardiothoracic hospital, caring for people with heart and lung conditions, including cancer. It has a strong research programme and particular expertise in health technology assessment. Recently there has been a move to forge stronger links with business and develop the potential for innovation.

The Cardio-Thoracic BioIncubator was conceived to create a dedicated innovation and enterprise environment to pioneer new developments in diagnostic technology and medical treatments of disease. Completed in summer 2005, this incubator aims to encourage closer collaboration between academic institutions, the NHS and the business community. It aims to attract companies engaged in areas such as the development of new medical devices for cardiovascular or respiratory diseases. It therefore complements the more broad-based facilities on offer at Papworth.

The success of the project was recently demonstrated when a 58-year-old patient from Papworth Hospital became the first person in the UK to receive a beating heart via a new system for organ conservation developed by TransMedics, a company based in the Cardio-Thoracic BioIncubator.
