Babraham Bioscience

The bioscience industry is vitally important to the UK economy and the Greater Cambridge biotechnology cluster is well established as the strongest in Europe. To maintain this position as a world leader in biotechnology innovation, continued effort is essential. Many potential barriers stand between the transition from biotechnology research to a licensed product. These include the identification of a suitable location and premises plus effective links to the academic research base, and commercial customers and partners.
Babraham Research Campus was established in 1993. It offers bespoke accommodation for bioventures at any stage in the business development cycle and supports the full spectrum of science from R&D to commercial realisation. The BioIncubator (open since 1998) and a technology accelerator – Aitua (previously Babraham BioConcepts Ltd) – provide the infrastructure to accelerate the technology transfer process; promote the commercial development of the Babraham Institute’s Intellectual Property; and offer an attractive environment for emerging life science enterprises. EEDA's support through the GCP of £1.8m has helped develop the centre.
There are currently 30 companies based on the campus developing technology platforms, products and services for the biomedical, biotechnological and healthcare sector. These ventures employ over 200 staff.
